The project draws on a wide variety of sources. A key source is the “statistical” description of Denmark by the law professor Johan Frederik Wilhelm Schlegel (1765-1836). The “Danish States” included not just the kingdom of Denmark proper, but also the kingdom of Norway, and the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, “Finmarken (i.e. the parts of Sápmi in Norway), the North Atlantic islands Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland as well as the colonial possessions in Asia, the Caribbean and West Africa.
The book, which can be found here, was a work of “statistics” in the eighteenth century meaning of the term, meaning something like social and political science. That is, not just a collection of numerical data, but rather a complete description of the Danish states, both “physical”, including geography, climate, population, flora, fauna, and “political”, including general history, mode of government and laws, customs, agriculture and commerce.
It was intended as a complete guide to the Danish states which was “necessary” for the “enlightened” and patriotic citizen and for “lawyers, economists, and statesmen”. In other words, it was necessary for those civil servants governing the state, and for the enlightened citizens who wished to understand and debate this.
As part of this “statistical” description, the work also included a bibliography of works used and as a guide for further reading. As such, it gives an overview of the publicly available information about the Danish colonies and the Danish colonial state.
